The applicant can apply to a school of nursing for a 3 year programme, and upon completion sit for an external exam conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria, in order to be a registered nurse(RN). Whereas, on the other hand, the applicant can apply to a University for a 5 year programme, and upon completion sits for external exams conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), and the West Africa Health Examination Board (WAHEB). Upon completion the University trained nurse is a Registered Nurse(RN), Registered Midwife, Registered Public Health Nurse with a Bachelors degree in nursing (BSc.nursing).
